Residential Design 2019

Located in sunny Santa Monica, this residential conceptual design project focuses on utilizing existing plant material and aesthetic to breathe new life into this beloved backyard space. The family was looking for a low maintenance Mediterranean space that focused on their love of fresh grown fruits and vegetables . The backyards ground plane is decomposed granite with small swaths of plantings that help to define the different rooms. Existing fruiting trees have been clustered together to create a small orchard with a meandering stepping stone path. The pergola has been extended and trained with an existing pink pandora vine, creating an outdoor dinning space complete with a large farm style table, pizza oven and grill. The family’s vintage galvanized tub has been repurposed as a water feature surrounded by English lavender to serve as a focal point for the informal outdoor seating. The back third of the yard has been dedicated to raised vegetable and herb planters. To provide privacy, the backyard fence has been lined with a 2’ wide podocarpus green screen.
